Where Has the Gardener Been?

by The Gardener on Thursday, April 10, 2008

The Gardener has been in exile from the garden.  In fact, the Garden has been for sale for several months and, although a number of people have expressed interest, the right buyer has not yet come along.  If and when the right person shows an interest in carrying on, there will be a sale.

Why?

The answer is very simple:  The Garden participates in the October breast cancer awareness program, as described in the post below.

There have been more visitors to this site in relationship to that post than ever before in this site’s history.

That post generated more comments than any other post.  Many folks took the time to leave a comment in support of the campaign to raise money for the American Cancer Society.  In fact, comments are still being posted expressing support.

And yet  . . . not a single person participated in the campaignNot one.  Not a single penny was raised.

Why?  Well, I have lots of theories, none of which really matter.

The fact that so many people feigned interest and support, but completely failed to follow through, disappointed and discouraged me to the point that I decided to sell the site and quit blogging. In fact, it has taken me many months to muster the strength to sign on and write this post expressing my feelings.

We are by nature flawed and imperfect beings.  But that not a single poster stepped up and put his/her money where his/her comment was by actually making a donation was too much for me.  Just. too. much.

They feel better that they wrote for everyone in the world that they support finding a cure for breast cancer, but how many of them have actually raised any money? How many have done a race for the cure (done it in 2 states with my wife!)?

I am pleased to hear about the breast cancer awareness program you have participated in. It’s highly appreciated from bottom of my heart.

Thanks for being so humble.

Often you have to keep going to get anywhere or anything in life. Humans are no where near perfect and often need reminding again and again to take action.

Perhaps if you set up a Paypal.com account and asked for small donations to be sent then it would work better. People in general are mistrusting but maybe willing to make a small donation to a worthy cause.

I really hope you aren’t giving up on blogging over one incident. Maybe you just need to take some time off.

If you do still decide to sell, I hope you find someone worthy. You put a lot of time into this blog, so I hope you decide to keep it.

I can definitely understand the frustration. When you devote so much time and energy to a great cause, you’d like to see a great reaction. Some time it doesn’t work out.

I completely understand where you’re coming from though especially when a campaign that enticing is less than successful. I think our company would have certainly have participated in such a wonderful campaign. Well, I guess now I hope that you do find a good gardener to pass on the garden to who will take good care of it.

34 Claire Civil Engineering Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at 12:23 am

I see where you are coming from, people are selfish, and as the generations move on, everyone has become more selfish. I heard on the radio a few months back, that a someone just going home from civil engineering had been knocked over by a car, and that cars where just driving by completely ignoring and in the end this person died. All because of peoples arrogance and ignorance, and selfishness.

I think that people should take the time to help others, it brings a good sense of wellbeing. My boyfriends stepmum has breast cancer, and is going through a pretty tough time at the moment, so i am all for cancer research, although where is the donations part to your site?

Keep the blog going. People need this kind of blogging in the blogosphere.

45 Candy List Diva Saturday, August 30, 2008 at 12:57 pm

Consider the fact that this blog has been added to something called the “D List,” which is huge resource for bloggers (and spammers, sadly) looking to build back-links to their own sites. People come here (and go to the other blogs on that list) hoping to leave comments for the sole purpose of generating linkage and building better page rankings. The comments they leave are thinly-veiled garbage and certainly less-than-genuine, but that’s not surprising, considering the nature of the incoming traffic. (I noticed there are several people who have actually commented on THIS very entry in the same manner.)

I found your blog through the D List myself, but (as per usual) I simply can’t bring myself to spam the site with meaningless drivel. I feel compelled to assure you that giving up on blogging altogether (as a result of this unfortunate situation) would be a huge mistake. I hope you’ll reconsider.
