The "I Follow" Phenomenon

A while back, in response to a post on Beta Blogger 4 Dummies, we removed the “no follow” attribute from our html code to allow search spiders to find comments posted here.

The “do follow” movement has picked up steam in a major way. Randa Clay created the attractive button in our left sidebar. You can download it, too, and add it to your site.

Here are the instructions for participating in the “I Follow” movement:
***Begin to copy here***

1. Write a short paragraph at the beginning of your post introducing the program and including a link back to the blog that added your blog to the list. This is mandatory, not optional, because we are all doing this to benefit each other. Not only does it help eliminate so much duplicate content being posted all over the blogosphere, it is only fair: That blogger added your blog to the list, so the least you can do is give them credit via that link back.

2. Copy the list of original blogs set forth below COMPLETELY and add it to your blog. If you would like a different keyword for your blog, change it when you publish your post. That keyword should not disturb the linking system.

3. Move the blogs listed as “adds” in the original post where you picked up these instructions (that would be here) and add them to the list of “Originals.”

4. Add at least one new blog that you KNOW is using the Do Follow plugin (WordPress) or has removed the “nofollow” attribute from its template (Blogger) to the list entitled “Blogs Added.” (Add no more than five!) Then inform those bloggers that you have added their blogs to the list, so that they can, in turn, keep the list going.

5. Leave relevant comments on the blogs listed and get a link back to your site from each thanks to “Do Follow”!

Additionally, Tricia of Tricia’s Musings has established a Do Follow blogroll. All you need to do is visit her site and leave a comment confirming that you are using the plug-in or have removed the attribute. She will then add you to the blogroll and forward the code to you so that you can added it to your site.Questions? As a tribute to those bloggers who follow links (remove nofollow attribute from links) in comments and trackbacks I have created a custom search engine to search within blogs that follow links in comments and trackbacks. Hope this will be helpful to bloggers who are in search of posts in their niche to comment on.

I am looking forward to your participation in this project. If you are willing to become a contributor please click on “Volunteer to contribute” link on the Custom Search Engine homepage. By becoming a contributor you can add new blogs to the search engine and apply labels to blogs to refine searches.

If not you can simply contribute by sending in the URLs of the blogs that follow links in their comments and trackbacks section.

Don’t forget to bookmark this custom search engine for your own use.

You can also add this search engine to your google ig homepage and also to your blog! Just visit the custom search engine homepage and you’ll find the links to add them.

Love you guys and Randa!

I been a strong proponent to get rid of the rel=”nofollow” tag, which is being used to hoard Google Prage Rank.

I advocate against it on The creater’s blog.

I started my forum to be a travel forum, but it is becoming a place to check and oversee Google.

With Google having a monopoly on Internet searches we the builders and the keepers of the Internet need to keep an eye on Google and its honesty towards the Internet Global Village.

Good luck,

I’ve only started using wordpress 2 months ago. I’ve however red about the do follow movement and intend to install the needed plugin (sometime soon I hope). Your policy seems reasonable and quite easy to implement, as I already moderate comments. The delete button is, I believe, the best and safest way to deal with spam at all levels (mail/spam comments).

I believe that while the dofollow movement does attract comments and traffic, it is also a magnet for spammers. I allow people to post links to ‘legit’ and non-offensive sites in their signature as long as they leave a constructive and contributive comment…why shouldn’t good comments be rewarded, right?

As much as I’m an advocate to the whole DO FOLLOW movement it does result in tons of spam. It does serve some purpose that is useful but ultimately once you realize all the adult, poker, insurance, etc… comments you get it makes sense almost. The only problem is sometimes you can find some useful comments and interesting sites based on the do follow blogs. Wish you luck on the do follow project.

Great list of dofollow blogs. I’m glad to see more sites picking up on the dofollow idea. It really promotes commenting on blogs and rewards those who comment well.

I joined the do follow movement without following these instructions.
I am searching for do follow bloggers but I have noticed that most of them are no follow now.
I am glad yours is still a do follow.

Yeah, it’s pretty easy to change your stuff to exclude no follow. It’s a tag invented by Google in order to make the net bend to it’s will, they are harming the net. Bad Google!
